In the past, a man was elected and sat in his house, met with potential cabinet members, and courteously, carefully kept out of the news except to make a statement announcing a new nominee. The incumbent was president until Inauguration Day. That's the way it was even in 2016; Barack Obama was still seen as president after Mr. Trump was elected. All that has changed.
