'The bells are ringing, for me and my pal' – gay pal that is. Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs Manu Sareen has promised homosexual couples they will soon be able to get married in church.

The first hearing of the gay wedding bill will be concluded on Wednesday but Mr Sareen said he couldn’t see anything to prevent same-sex couples from walking down the aisle before summer.

“It’s an issue that’s been debated for years but I’m definite it’s going to be passed,” he said. “The first couples can start ordering their wedding outfits.”

Although Denmark has been in the forefront of homosexual legislation gay couples have only previously been allowed to form a civil partnership and not a marriage entered in a church of an officially recognized religion in front of a priest. However, priests will still have the option of refusing to marry same-sex couples.
